There are also V-LogL and Rec.709 lookup tables in-camera without any payware software keys required to unlock their use, plus the ability to upload four more LUTs of your own in Panasonic's .VLT format. As with the Sony cameras, there’s a price penalty for the lower-resolution cameras; not because they cost more to build but because they cater for a more specialised market. The LUMIX GH5s sensor is capable of multiple aspect ratios; 4:3, 17:9, 16:9 and 3:2. That said, given the GH5S's intended focus as a professional video camera, it's safe to assume that most users will be cinematographers that utilize manual focus the vast majority of the time. While the sensor on the GH5 was a 20.3 megapixel one the one on the GH5S has a resolution of only 10.82. Unfortunately, the lack of in-built stabilisation made it difficult to maintain focus while walking, even though a stabilised lens was being used. Another feature subtraction versus the original GH5 is that the Panasonic GH5S lacks a 6K Photo mode, for the simple reason that it doesn't have sufficient pixels on its sensor to yield a 6K feed. Continuous shooting speeds are the same as in the GH5, with a maximum of 12 fps when the mechanical shutter is used and 60 fps in 4K Photo mode. And for the earlier camera, that was it, but the GH5S will now continue on up to ISO 204,800 if you enable its extended sensitivity range. This makes it unlike most cameras, where one specific sensitivity offers the best signal to noise ratio since the signal needn't be amplified before A/D conversion, and noise levels climb or dynamic range is curtailed as you raise or lower the sensitivity from its native point. The 4K video on the GH5S looks so good that stills captured from the 4K footage can pass off as stills. It's the camera to get out when you really need to push the limits of current sensor tech. Bottom line, the Panasonic GH5S' performance is generally quite good to excellent for its class. I don't think anyone would have thought we would be comparing a Micro Four Thirds sensor to a full frame and really debating which did better, but here we are. The GH5Sâ sensor is 10.2MP, almost half of the 20.3MP packed inside the GH5. So while it is less saturated, that's not the whole reason why the A7S II look better here. The two "High" ISO settings of 102,400 and 204,800 are pretty noisy, muddy and overall not great. You can see above that at 4Kp60, both clips are very clean and look quite good. Physically, the two cameras are almost identical but the GH5S introduces a new 10.2-megapixel High Sensitivity MOS sensor, which together with the latest Venus Engine 10 processor enables the addition of Dual Native ISO technology, along with a raft of functions found in Panasonic’s Varicam professional camcorders. Both 5 GHz (IEEE802.11ac) and the conventional 2.4 GHz (IEEE 802.11b/g/n) are available, the latter providing a more secure and stable connection. The GH5S also includes support for anamorphic capture, which means you can set the camera to ‘squeeze’ or ‘un-squeeze’ the display, depending on the end result you want. It also provides a vertical position shutter release button plus standard control buttons to make operation smoother in portrait orientation and matches the camera’s weather-resistant properties. Lens mount: Micro Four Thirds While we tried out the GH5s’s full range of video settings, the results of some settings were so similar we don’t think it’s worth providing frame grabs from all of them and have instead offered a representative selection covering the broad range of options available. And while the AF speed is slightly slower than the GH5, and the lack of in-body image stabilization removes some of what made the GH5 so versatile, the GH5S offers such a wealth of features and high-quality video, that it's easy to overlook these minor points. There's a reason for that divergence from our usual detail-oriented content: The Panasonic GH5S is rare in that it offers a true multi-aspect ratio capability, and so the very notion of a single, overall "sensor resolution" gets turned on its head somewhat. Raw file conversion almost always involves a loss of saturation and that occurred with the raw files from the GH5S, although reds, mid blues and skin hues were very close to the ideal values. Three data formats are available for MP4 recordings: the regular MP4 format for playing back on a computer, MP4 HEVC for recording HDR movies that will be played back on a HDR (HLG format compatible) TV set or recorder and MP4 LPCM for video clips that will be edited. In addition, the camera’s multi-aspect ratio capability, which crops the sensor within the image circle so cropped images have the same diagonal field of view, could be beneficial to many stills photographers (see below). So is the Rec.709 LUT (Look Up Table), which means users can playback videos recorded in V-LogL directly. And its smaller sensor is cheaper to manufacture. The highest video performance in LUMIX history gives you the power to capture the world â and change it. And that's not just important for video capture, either. The Panasonic Lumix DC-GH5 features a 20-MPix sensor, presumably the same or a related sensor adopted by other high-end models such as the makerâs DMC-GX8 and the rival Olympus EM-1 Mark II.So it will come as no surprise to learn that it delivers scores that are among the best-in-class for this size sensor. The lower of the pair equates to ISO 400 ordinarily (ISO 800 for V-LogL or HLG capture), and the higher equates to ISO 2500 ordinarily (ISO 5000 for V-LogL or HLG). Sure, it's less saturated, but the size of the noise grain is much smaller than that of the GH5S, and overall the sharpness is better on the A7S II. The GH5S has a new slightly larger 10.2MP MFT sensor with half the pixel count of the GH5âs 21.7MP, but these pixels are almost two times larger. On the GH5S, however, you can use 24p, 25p, 30p, 50p or 60p options in either format. Both are about the same speed as the GH5. I can recall just a few from my past that represent more than just a tool, but an extension of me as an artist. I said that the GH5S is one of the best video cameras ever made, and I of course will catch flack for such a statement. This allows the sensor to take advantage of any lens and its natural angle of view even though the shoo⦠Sensitivity tops out by default at ISO 51,200, where the GH5 had an upper limit of ISO 25,600. The Panasonic GH5S impresses with its ability to shoot consumer 4K and Cinema 4K content entirely in-camera at a rate of 60 frames per second, both of which the company says are world's firsts for a mirrorless camera. Based on pro videographer feedback, Panasonic opted to leave IBIS out on this higher-end model, as the IBIS system can potentially produce noise and it can also interfere with lots of stabilizer rigs, such as gimbals, cranes and other camera-mounting gear often used in professional video productions. But then when you realize that with the GH5S you lose IBIS, suddenly the conversation shifts. 600 images with JPEGs, Approx. Hence why they call it an mft sensor. All in all, the GH5S has pretty much every video feature and setting required for all but the most demanding or specialized video creator. And for the latter you can choose whether or not you want the GH5S to desqueeze the display (or if you prefer, squeeze it vertically as well) so that you can see the final result either for live view or playback. The arrival of the GH5 really pushed the envelope for video on Micro Four Thirds, as it packed in a boatload of excellent video features, such as 4K 60p, 10-bit internal recording, high bitrates, as well as many video settings and options typically found in full-on video cameras. If you're curious how 10-bit, 8-bit and ALL-I compare for post production work, it's generally agreed upon that 10-bit is going to be your best bet. In real-world shooting, however, the AF experience is not drastically different from the GH5. Four additional LUTs can be installed using the Panasonic Varicam (.VLT) file format. It makes shooting hand held so much easier and the IBIS in the GH5 is excellent. Sensor resolution is calculated from sensor size and effective megapixels. With 14-bit raws, both figures drop by one frame per second. With both file types, the highest values were obtained at the native setting of ISO 160 after which there was a very gradual decline as sensitivity was increased. Up to a 2.5x slow-motion effect is possible for 4K or Cinema 4K footage, and up to a 10x slow-motion effect for Full HD content. Where images shot with varying aspect ratios on most digicams will also vary in their diagonal field of view, with the Panasonic GH5S it never changes, and that makes choosing aspect ratios is a totally guilt-free experience. You can see some noise appear on the GH5 and quite a bit is evident on the 1DX II, but there is none (really, none visible at all) on the GH5S. This means users can swap between different aspect ratios and still enjoy the same diagonal field of view between them and makes it easier to match clips when editing in post-production. Argue with me all you want about Canon Cinema cameras or Blackmagic equipment, there is no doubt that the GH5S can do anything those cameras could be used for either just as well or better, and for a fraction of the price. Panasonic is probably correct in assuming most potential users of this camera will have already invested (or be prepared to invest) in a gimbal, rather than relying only on the lens IS to ensure steady shooting. This would give it one more stop of dynamic range than the Sony A7SII at similar ISO settings. It’s based on providing two separate read-out circuits, each with different amplification. Finally, and this is actually more than a minor change, the GH5S actually has a different crop factor than the GH5. Each photodiode has grown in size by around 1.96 times, and according to Panasonic that change translates to a 1.5-stop (9.7dB) improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio. But that's for stills; you can expect the GH5S to prove much more satisfying when it comes to video autofocus. 60mm focal length, ISO 160, 1/400 second at f/5.6. There are fewer pixels for the GH5S' DFD AF system to pull data from, so the AF speed is rated slightly slower, and our lab tests concur. Soundtracks are recorded in stereo in all three modes. The ability of this lens to be used for both photo and video recording makes it an ideal partner for the new camera, thanks to its integrated stabilisation.
